VERTICAL ELECTRICAL SOUNDING

This method consists of a group of apparent resistivity determinations, done with the same type of lineal device and increasing separation between emission and reception electrodes.
The aim of EVS is obtaining a apparent resistivity variation model with respect to depth, starting from measures taken on surface. The reached depth by current increases as the distance AB does.
  • Emission circuit, integrated by a source of energy, an ammeter to measure intensity of current, emission points (A and B) consisting in 0.5 to 1 m long and 200 mm diameter metallic nails and transmission wires. In regular soundings a 12 volts battery is used together with a 250 W converter. The ammeter allows to register up to 10 A, with a 1% accuracy, and 0.1 MA resolution. The transmission wire has a 1mm2 section, so to be transported and extended it is rolled to a 500m capacity reel.
  • Reception circuit, formed by an electric high impedance milivoltmeter and to impolarizable electrodes to the measure of potential (m and N.)
After establishing the sounding location and wings direction and installing the measure device at the center, 4 electrodes are put ( A M N B) according to the device to be used. The soil natural potential is compensated and energized by a continuous intensity current I on MA (electrodes AB) and you can read the difference of potential _v in MV (electrodes MN.) the values are transferred to a chart and apparent resistivity is calculated.

MAIN APPLICATIONS

  • Soil geoelectric bedding investigation (hidrogeology, geotechnique)
  • Aquifer studies: depth, density, properties (salinity)
  • Aquifer monitoring (pollution)
